Pileated woodpeckers are familiar inhabitants of the island. Their strangely primordial call can be heard ringing from all areas of the island. They are retiring birds, and sightings are usually brief as they quickly flit through the air into deeper wooded areas.
As soon as we noticed the adult pileated woodpeckers select the tree for nest excavation, we began a routine of vigilant observation. The baby female and male pileated image is a result of weeks of patience. One day they were gone.
